Biography
Vako Kirkitadze is a Georgian filmmaker, writer, and producer born in 1989 into a family of artists. His mother, grandparents, and great-grandmother were actors, and his great-great-grandmother was among the first Georgian women to perform on stage. Storytelling and performance were therefore present from the beginning, but it was his grandfather an actor with a remarkable gift for imitation who ignited Vako’s lifelong relationship with cinema.
During wartime blackouts, when electricity was unavailable, his grandfather powered a 16mm projector using a car battery and screened films for the neighborhood. The projector had no sound, so he performed every character live, shifting voices, tones, and personalities with instinctive precision. Vako grew up watching Bicycle Thieves, The Magnificent Seven, Raj Kapoor films, and stories from different genres and cultures, all filtered through his grandfather’s performances. In those evenings, surrounded by darkness and community, he discovered the emotional power of storytelling. It was then that cinema became not only something to watch, but something to make.
He studied film directing at Tbilisi State University. His directorial debut, September, a reflection on war and memory, was nominated for the Student Academy Awards and selected for the official competition at the Montréal World Film Festival. Following a successful run of short films, he continued his studies at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree.
After graduating, Vako founded Film Asylum, which has since grown into one of Georgia’s leading production companies. As a producer, his feature film credits include Winter Blues and Sorrow of Fall, alongside numerous short films such as Duck Hunting and Gabana. His work spans commercials, branded content, documentaries, and television.
He is the creator and showrunner of the award-winning television series Bolo Sezoni (Last Season). More than a sports drama, the series explores themes of class, loyalty, identity, and redemption. It became a cultural phenomenon in Georgia and is set to enter its third season in November 2025.
Vako Kirkitadze is also the founder of a Georgian film cluster and a member of the Commercial Film Producers of Europe (CFPE). His work is recognized for its emotional depth, cinematic discipline, and its ability to bridge personal storytelling with universal themes.
